The signs of wars are looming all over the world. Human civilization has always witnessed different kinds of wars in the history of the world. On the other hand, if you talk about life or a business, I guess both are the ‘battle fields’ where we are struggling to achieve the best of life and the business.
Here, I am talking about one serious game, a Business War game! I know the next obvious question, what is it? If you take the literal meaning of the term Business War Game then you are right, it is a game that will make you either a winner or a loser in your business.
Sometimes, we hear or read news about losses in business, merging or acquisition of companies by some other companies, etc. There are articles or analyses on the acquiring companies, but very little is stressed on the acquired company. We only talk of victories or rather do not talk about the loopholes in businesses that propelled us to sell the business.
When a business is at loss or something goes wrong or something does not happen according to our plans then, I think, there is always a genuine need for ‘Introspection’. Today’s profit-making does not guarantee you long-term business benefits because nowadays, entrepreneurship is an easy option. The spirit and competitiveness have to be maintained in order to be in the business. You will be out of competition the day you will lose sight of your goals and competitors.
The reason for remaining ‘Competitive in your business’ in 21 century is that here you are not playing solo but surrounded with the other competitors, and you should know the rules of the battlefield in order to win the business game. Every team has its rules to defeat the enemy in the war ground. And it is well said that, if you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat, and if you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.
The common attitude of an entrepreneur or a business person to any new technique or a process is quite considered as a negative reaction because we have the tendency to reject or resist something new. But, in order to stay active in the business game, you should learn to mold your attitude positively in different circumstances and think of long-term benefits.
I know you might be saying that years of experience or a practical approach in tackling business problems are some virtues of good businesspersons, but sometimes your experience or a very good idea or a business strategy does not appeal to the consumer to buy your product. And, if you go in a traditional and routine way of thinking then your next step will be to find out the weaknesses or pitfalls in the plan or in execution, and again some changes are made in plans and strategies. Sometimes these changes work and we move ahead with a similar one-dimensional plan.
These one- dimensional (1D) plans give you the perspective of your own thinking process about your business which according to you may be right, but maybe a mistake from somebody’s point of view. One dimensional plan has the very little scope of improvement because if you take an example of a cook in a hotel then the cook can’t say he has cooked a bad dish or rather he will appreciate his own efforts of making the dish/recipe. But, somebody has to ascertain the cook whether his dish is good or bad, right? But, if the apprentice of the cook has got an opportunity to taste the dish then he could be biased on deciding the good or bad taste of the dish. On the other hand, a customer in the hotel would be the perfect judge for deciding the goodness of the dish. So if a businessperson is considered as a cook, his recipes should get the approval of the consumers, otherwise, he has to keep on changing one or the other ingredients of the dish or the whole dish!
So, what I believe about the business war game is the art of studying the effectiveness of your business plan/strategies or the market position of your company with certain rules. It also gives you three-dimensional perspectives to – Build a business strategy; help you in entering into new business adventures or reviving company products or plans or services or jumping into the new markets. All your questions will be solved if you know the rules of the Business War Games (BWG)! Or if you know the three-dimensional (3D) plan of your strategy which will involve the Cook, an Apprentice, and the consumer!
